Public space revitalization around the pond
The centre of Jinočany is a typical example of a Central Bohemian municipality, where public life naturally concentrates around the pond and the chapel. The design for the revitalization of May 5th Square builds on this spatial structure and seeks to sensitively enhance it with contemporary functions and high-quality public space.
The core principle of the proposal lies in the harmonious integration of natural and urban environments. The space is newly organized through a clearly legible division of functional areas, the use of natural materials, and sustainable stormwater management. Traffic calming is also a key theme. The main road passing through the square is transformed into a 30 km/h zone, while the streets around the pond are designed as shared spaces. This approach unlocks the site’s potential for everyday use and creates a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
The pond itself becomes the primary landscape feature of the area. Parts of its shoreline are newly made accessible and complemented with elements for leisure and relaxation. Where possible, rigid embankments are removed and replaced with natural edges featuring littoral zones and wetland vegetation.
The proposal also includes small-scale architectural elements—such as a new public restroom facility, a public transport stop, and designated areas for waste sorting. These components are designed to respect the character of the המקום and to integrate seamlessly into the structure of the square.
The space in front of the chapel is expanded, creating a natural setting for gatherings as well as smaller cultural events. Gravel and paved surfaces allow for flexible use of the square, accommodating both everyday activities and festive occasions.
Custom-designed street furniture plays an important role by introducing subtle references to the history of Jinočany. Through small steel plaques and spatial markers, fragments of local stories and historical traces are embedded into the environment.
New buildings for services and senior housing complement the structure of the centre and help define its natural edges. Their scale follows the surrounding development while supporting everyday life within the square.
The revitalization of the square is therefore not limited to surface improvements and landscaping, but primarily focuses on creating a cohesive public space that strengthens the identity of the municipality and provides a pleasant environment for both social interaction and daily life.
The revitalization of Jinočany’s centre sensitively builds upon the historical structure of the village, naturally connecting the pond, chapel, and square into a functional and contemporary whole. The proposal calms traffic, enhances the residential and social character of the space, and introduces high-quality landscape and architectural solutions that respect the rural context. The result is a vibrant public space that supports everyday life as well as social and cultural activities.
